Travelocity has really good rates for Hawaii.

“Travelocity just launched their Silver Lining Sale, featuring 50% off participating hotels when booking a vacation package! This week’s featured destination is Hawaii. Visit popular locations such as Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island for as little as $67 a night! This promotion will last until February 16th!”

I don’t think such a thing exists. I was looking into going to Hawaii last year and the studio apartments go for like $1200 a month. It’s crazy out there.

I was considering just living outside but I’ve found that that’s too common over there and homeless people are really looked down upon over there and hated by Hawaii residents and tourists.

I’ve always heard that white people aren’t well liked over there either. I have a friend that moved over there and she doesn’t feel like it was a very welcoming place. Buuut who knows?

Let’s break it down:

What is your definition of a hotel that won’t break your budget? Good luck finding a hotel anywhere on any of the Hawaiian Islands that costs less than $100.00 a night. Also, bear in mind you get what you pay for, so if you go cheap you’ll probably end up staying in a dive. Do some research — you may be able to find a good deal on a timeshare. Lots of people sublet timeshares if they’re not going to use them, and timeshares are usually condos that sleep at least four people (with a full kitchen, at least one full bath, living/dining area, etc.). You may think $1,500.00 for a week in a timeshare is expensive, but you’ll have a tough time finding a better deal — and you may be able to get a week for less than that.

The only place you might be able to get by with public transportation (and I stress the word MIGHT) is Honolulu. If you go anywhere else, or if you want to see more of Oahu than just Honolulu, you’ll want a rental car. Public transportation in Honolulu is just like it is in other major cities like New York, Chicago, L.A., etc., so don’t go into it thinking it’s “nice” because it’s Hawaii.

For convenience, you’re better off picking one island that you want to check out, stay in one place, and get around by rental car. Air fare from one island to another is atrocious (Oahu to Maui starts at $200.00 per person round trip) and all the Hawaiian islands are all easily traveled by car. There are a couple of places you don’t want to drive on Maui (northwest end of the island), but for the most part the roads are fine. Even on “The Big Island” you can make it from one side of the island to the other in 2 hours.
